Here come the Holidays...



Dear Friends,


Facing holiday gatherings that are focused on food and conversation can be challenging.


Here are a few things to keep in mind:


-Just because you can’t partake in the same way you once did, you are no less interesting or worthy.

Try not to feel less. You are so much more than you ever were. You are wiser, more resilient, and have a deeper level of compassion and understanding.


-You can gather with others and simply be in each other’s company; you don’t have to eat with them. If you do eat with others, please don’t rush to keep up. Eat at your own pace so you don’t aspirate, swallow air, or induce anxiety (you can always eat more later when you are alone and peaceful).


-If you have something to say and folks aren’t hearing you because your articulation is weak, inject yourself by firmly declaring, “I would like to say something.” Then, folks will realize you need the space, and they will pause and listen more closely. Remember, you are an interesting and beautiful soul, and people DO want to hear you.


-It's beneficial to bring foods you're certain you can eat to holiday gatherings. Consider these seasonal bisque soups, which are simple to consume (not too watery and without chunks) and quite tasty. Even if you can eat solid foods, a bisque is a great choice because you won't have to worry about food particles getting lodged in your mouth while conversing.




I recently purchased a porridge, soup, and plant-based milk maker, which features a setting that prepares creamy soup in just 30 minutes. It's quickly become my favorite kitchen gadget. It's incredibly easy to use; simply place the ingredients in the container, add water, and select the soup mode. You might want to look it up online and find one that suits you, then perhaps have Santa bring it to you


My favorite is the MioMat. The recipes here are from the MioMat recipe book (I've modified them to my taste). If you don't own a soup maker, you can cook the ingredients in a pot on the stove or a crockpot as you would with any soup, and then blend everything in a powerful blender to achieve the bisque consistency.


Cauliflower & Pumpkin Soup

• 125 grams of pumpkin

• 1 carrot

• 1 onion

• 125 grams of cauliflower

• 125 grams of zucchini

• 1 can of coconut milk

• tablespoon of olive oil

• salt and pepper

• dash of paprika and cumin

• 1300ml of your fave broth or water



Sweet Potato Soup:

• 2 medium sweet taters

• 1 medium onion

• 1 carrot

• 1 cup of red lentils

• 1 tsp curry powder or sub turmeric and cumin (add more if you like)

• 1 tsp grated ginger (optional)

• chili powder to taste if you like the heat (optional)

• salt and pepper to taste

• tablespoon of butter or oil of choice (optional)

• 1300 ml of your fave broth or water




*If you reduce your stock or water by boiling it on the stove, you might need to add more liquid.

*When using a blender, be cautious of burns by not overfilling it; blend in two separate batches.
